Hamidi Mosque is considered one of the most famous mosques in the city of Jerash. It was built during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II in 1879 and named in his honor. Surrounded by Roman ruins on its north and west sides, the mosque overlooks the Roman amphitheater and the street of columns. A Roman canal ran near the mosque, but it was diverted to avoid damaging the foundations. The mosque was expanded in 1984 and features a round stone minaret that is 15 meters tall and can accommodate about 1,500 prayers.
