About the Site

Al- Nashmiyya Association for the Development of Women and Children is a charity organization that was begun in 2015 and now has over 33 women who work at the center in various capacities including travel, culture and food. The location is quite unique as it is the first building in the area referred to as New Jerash from 1967.  The original stone wall that enclosed the home is still visible to guests, and the last standing wall.  The backyard area gives a wonderful view of the city and on a clear day you can see clearly across the valley.

The women offer a traditional Thob experience. (A “Thob” is a traditional garment worn by men and women, sometimes ornate and decorated with traditional embroidery). Guests are taken on a tour back in time, learning about the various types of Thobs worn and what their stitches and colors represent.

Many people have heard of Henna but don’t really know what and how this unique and colorful herb is used. Henna is used to decorate the skin with intricate designs especially before a wedding celebration, held for women only, the Henna party is one of the most looked forward to gatherings of a wedding. The Henna is brought into the party area on decorated baskets to pulsating music.  The women are dressed up in their finest Thobs, dancing away and you will too. One lucky girl will also dress up as the bride, and be the center of the party.

All these experiences can be ended with a meal featuring a local specialty.  The most popular dish chosen is Maglouba, or upside down, a dish made with meat or chicken, rice and vegetables. Your lesson will be led by a local, teaching you the tricks to cooking delicious Jordanian food!
